How To Build a Mini ITX high performance gaming computer!

In this article I will describe how to build a high performance gaming computer to for the right price.

Main focus for this build was a quiet and fast machine with 4K display support and not actually gaming this time. One key factor is then the SSD.

My budget for this project was 1200€.

The computer parts I bought into this configuration was:

Case                     BitFenix Phenom Mini-ITX – (white)

HDD                     Samsung 840 EVO Series SSD 500GB SATA3

RAM                    G.Skill Ares 16GB DDR3 PC-12800 1600MHz

Motherboard     ASUS Z97I-PLUS - mITX socket 1150

CPU                      Intel Core i5-4670K

Graphic Card      ASUS GeForce GTX 760 2GB DirectCU II OC

PSU                      be quiet! PowerSupply (PSU) Pure Power L8 630W

DVD                     ASUS DRW-24F1ST

Cooler                  Zalman CNPS14X Ultra Quiet CPU

The reason I chose BitFenix Phenom was the clean white front design and all the flexibility this case gives you. It’s not the smallest case on the market but you will have a lot of nice options if you change your mind and want a small upgrade in the future. The BitFenix construction is also very solid and the motherboard is also mounted horizontally, which I like.

Today you can get a quite large SSD at reasonable price. One of the leading manufacturers today when it comes to price and performance is Samsung and specially the EVO series.  Not using SSD today is not an option if you want performance and silence. Tips: For great fast automatic backup functionality I recommend one extra SSD.

The choice of G.Skill Ares was because the price/performance ratio. Nothing else. I will say that 16GB is what you need in this type of build.

ASUS make great motherboards and Z971 is no exception. In this compact mini ITX construction you get a lot of nice to have features like:

-          802.11ac Wi-Fi (dual band)

-          Gigabit Ethernet

-          Bluetooth

-          USB 3.0

-          Great sound components.

-          EZ Tuning Wizard (BIOS interface)

-          Advanced fan cooling management.

I choice the Intel I5 because of the limited budget. If you have a higher budget? You can go or the i7.

Graphic Card

The main component for a gaming computer is of cause the graphic card and ASUS GeForce GTX 760 2GB

Is a great choice.  Especially in combination with the other ASUS components in this build. Then you minimize risk for compatibility issues. And again, with a higher budget you can get a better card. But this card is more than enough for me at least.

The PSU should deliver power to the other components and hopefully do it quiet. One power supply that can do that is the be quiet! L8 630W. I like it! The number of Watt depends on number of components you want in the case.

ASUS DRW-24F1ST is not expensive and not quiet. But it simplifies my installations. The computer is over all very quiet but as soon as the DVD runs rotation sound

My plan was to use the nice and quiet Zalman CNPS14X. BUT I will say! This cooler is not recommend on ITX boards. Yes It fits on the 1150 CPU socket. But one screw is impossible to reach behind the RAM. So I have to change back to the standard Intel cooler that is included in the CPU package.

I have to say that those components works great together except for the Zalman Cooler of cause.

The balance and compatibility is great. It’s very fast and quiet compare to my old PC. Thanks to the SSD. Exactly what I was looking for. My 4K UHD 28” display from Samsung works also well together with the ASUS graphic card. But note that normal resolution of 2560x1440 works best on 28” in Windows. If you don’t want very small text and icons.
